Workshop
Overview
Take Charge of Your Health Care takes
consumers through a review of the health care process, touching on the
single most important factor in receiving the proper treatment:
communication.
After identifying the challenge, we will
discuss methods and techniques that will help consumers take control of
their health care situation: from improving communication with physicians,
nurses and technicians, to understanding and taking full advantage of their
rights and privileges as patients.
Health Care Seminars
- Part 1: The Health Care
Challenge -
The single most important responsibility of
health care professionals is to assist their patients in getting the proper
care and treatment. But because the medical field is extremely complicated,
patients often become confused by what they are told, or by procedures or
medications prescribed. Consider the following:
Poor communication between physicians
and patients is the single most common cause of malpractice litigation.
New studies have shown that patients
coached to actively participate in their medical interviews recover quicker
and are more satisfied with their treatment than those who allow the
physician to control the examination.
Through Take Charge of Your Health Care, we
will show consumers how to be effective communicators, how to take control
of their health care and how to reduce the anxiety of the hospital and
medical experience.
Health Care Seminars
- Part 2: The Health Care
Diary -
The Personal Health Care Diary is a
critical communication and organizational tool for all patients. It's easy,
and it helps patients control and keep track of their complete medical
history, including medical and health situations, conditions and treatment
received. The Health Care Diary is also a place to keep documentation of
insurance benefits, as well as common questions, etc.
Take Charge of Your Health Care will
discuss the value of keeping a Health Care Diary, how to create and maintain
it, and how to use it.
Health Care Seminars
- Part 3: Understanding
Your Rights As A Patient -
Most people are not aware of the rights
they have as patients. It is human nature to follow the advice and direction
of experts, especially when it comes to health care professionals. But by
knowing their rights, patients can ensure proper treatment.
In the workshop, we will talk about patient
rights, misconceptions about the health care process, and the proper
questions to ask. Participants will receive a resource directory that offers
assistance for patients who want to learn about the rights they have in
various medical situations.

Take Charge of Your Health Care addresses
several key issues to the health care experience. The workshop contains
valuable information, and offers ample opportunity for questions from the
audience and discussion of specific topics of interest.
- Am I Getting The Proper Care? We
will discuss the challenges faced by today's patients in the health care
arena.
Experts estimate that as many as 15
billion medication errors occur in the nation's 7,000 hospitals each year.
According to Jane Perkins, staff attorney for the National Health Law
Program, "Education consumers to ask questions for themselves is a wonderful
consumer protection."
- Do I Have An Open Line Of
Communication With My Physician? We will discuss the importance of
communication with your health care professionals to understand what is
happening at every step of the health care process. You will also receive
a list of questions to ask health care professionals to ensure you are
getting the proper care.
Quality of doctor visits improves as
questions are asked.
Research at the University of Dayton found that patients who write out
questions before an office visit increase the accuracy and detail of the
information they receive.
The research found that those who write
down their questions before a visit leave the doctor's office feeling less
anxious about their medical conditions and more at ease with their
physician.
The study also noted that a physician
who sees a patient with questions is usually more likely to take that
concern and interest as a positive sign that the patient is actively
involved in the treatment decision and plan.
- Have I Taken Control Of My Health
Care? We will explain the importance of developing a personal Health
Care Diary and in general, taking control of your health care. We will
also discuss issues such as patient rights, and offer a directory of
resources that can assist patients across a wide range of situations.
Taking Control Is The First Step
In a New York Times article, Leonard Sloane writes: "Talking to a doctor
leaves many of us tongue-tied. We are unable to describe our specific
condition, embarrassed to discuss certain matters and unprepared to ask
appropriate questions about diagnosis and treatment. In short, we are
intimidated by the surroundings and do not speak up."
Leonard's statements should alert consumers
to the fact that they need to take control of their health care. Take Charge
of Your Health Care puts patients on the right track.
